Group Term Life Insurance

The SOMA Group Term Life Insurance plan is currently available to SOMA members in all states and the District of Columbia. This program provides life insurance coverage to help pay your financial obligations, including your student loans, in the event of an untimely death from an accident or illness.

 
SIMPLIFIED ISSUE OFFER FOR
TERM LIFE INSURANCE AMOUNTS
$50,000 OR $100,000
 

You may apply to purchase 50,000 or $100,000 of term insurance renewable to age 55 on a simplified issue basis. "Simplified Issue" means that your answers to a short health questionnaire will be used to determine if you can be accepted for coverage. No exam by a physician or a paramedical service will be required.

Coverage (not to exceed your amount) is also available on the same basis for your spouse who is under age 50.

 
HIGHER TERM LIFE INSURANCE AMOUNTS
$150,000 - $200,000 - $250,000
 

If your immediate priority is maximum life insurance protection at the lowest cost, you may apply to purchase $150,000, $200,000 or $250,000 of term life insurance renewable to age 55 on a fully underwritten basis. "Fully underwritten" means that your answers to a health questionnaire will be used to determine if you can be accepted for coverage. A physical exam or paramedical service may be required for amounts above $100,000.

Coverage (not to exceed your amount) is also available on the same basis for your spouse who is under age 50.

 
ELIGIBILITY
MEMBERS

All active, dues paying osteopathic medical school student members of SOMA who are in good standing and under age 50 can apply for coverage in $50,000 increments from $50,000 to $250,000. Members and applying eligible spouses will need to complete a simplified application for coverage amounts up to $100,000 and be approved in order to participate. Full underwriting will be used for amounts above $100,000 and applicants must be approved to participate. Coverage will terminate at age 55.

 
Lawful Spouse of Members

All lawful spouses of eligible SOMA Members who are under age 50 are eligible to participate in this plan providing the Member participates. A spouse cannot apply for any coverage amount in excess of the Member's coverage amount. The same underwriting requirements explained above for Members will apply to all spouses applying for coverage. Coverage will terminate at age 55.

 
Dependent Children of Members

Dependent children of eligible SOMA Members age 6 months to 19 years (23 if a full time student) are eligible to participate in this plan providing the Member participates. Coverage is available in $2,500 increments up to a maximum of $10,000.

 
BENEFICIARY DESIGNATION / CONVERSION / ASSIGNABILITY
UNLESS YOU SPECIFICALLY NAME A BENEFICIARY OR BENEFICIARIES, the policy provides that the benefits will be paid in order to the first of the following individuals who survive you:
  • Your spouse;
  • Your child or children (in equal shares);
  • Your parents (jointly if both are living or in full to the surviving parent)
  • Your brother(s) and/or sister(s) (jointly if all are living or in equal parts to the surviving sibling(s)).
If none of your spouse, children, parents or siblings are living at the time of your death, the benefits will be paid to your estate.

You are the beneficiary of your spouse's and children's coverage.

In specified circumstances, you may be able to convert your coverage to an individual policy. Note that there are some state restrictions. In addition, you may assign your benefits to another person or entity. Details of these provisions will be included in the Certificate of Insurance issued to each insured member.

 
EXCLUSIONS

Death resulting from suicide is not covered under this program for the first 2 years of an insured person’s coverage. If this occurs, benefits will be limited to a refund of the premiums paid on the insured person’s behalf. This exclusion generally applies whether or not the insured person is considered sane or insane.
